Your Car as Chauffeur

By way of my friend Bob Schulties' Cars! Cars! Cars! site I've been directed to an interesting article by GM exec Bob Lutz, which originally appeared a couple of years back in Fortune magazine and is now online at CNN.com. In it, Lutz suggests the time will definitely come when cars drive themselves while drivers sit back, relax, and sip their coffee. Of course, that's been a dream for decades, beginning with the 1939 New York World's Fair. But until the advent of GPS, computer car control, in-car radar, and a raft of new technologies it was thought that highways would have to be wired, at huge expense. Now, says Lutz, that won't be necessary. He explains how the systems work together and admits that, for most situations, automatic car control is a good thing but like those of us who love to drive, will still seek out his own space, which for Bob Lutz means a motorcycle. I'll take a new Miata, thanks.
