World’s Largest Classic Car Auction Begins

I'm writing this from Scottsdale, Arizona, where the 35th annual Barrett-Jackson classic car auction is about to start. Billed as "the world's greatest collector event" it is unquestionably the biggest, with over 1000 cars detailed to perfection and ready to go under the hammer. The sale takes place in (more superlatives!) "the world's largest tent": nine stories high, wide as a football field, and a 1/4 mile long.

The cars are certainly an eclectic group but this year there's a special focus on concepts, including the sensational 1954 Pontiac Bonneville Motorama "dream car" designed by famed GM stylist Harley Earl, and the 1952 Chrysler d'Elegance penned by Virgil Exner. Actually Barrett-Jackson is just one of five major Auctions, the others being rather more specialised in the types of vehicles offered. Monday was for previews, with most of the participants delivering their cars to the big tent where potential buyers had an opportunity to check them over. It wasn't a day for photo ops but to whet your appetite I did manage a quick snap of a lovely customised rod with more interesting entries waiting behind.

From now through Saturday I'll be reporting on this extraordinary event for 4Drivers Only, even while glorying in Arizona's warm sun, blue skies, and absolutely magnificent desert scenery.
