World Car of the Year, but Whose World Is It?

Nowadays it seems as though every country has its Car of the Year award. So do we really need a World Car of the Year? Well, the organisers would argue that since the auto industry is becoming more integrated internationally, it makes sense to honor the best of the best. And they have a point. Whether or not the winner truly represents the tastes and hopes of people everywhere is, however, doubtful. The jurors are automobile journalists and inevitably they lean towards performance and sportiness when casting their vote. For example, the three finalists are the BMW 3 Series, Mazda MX-5, and Porsche Cayman S. I wonder what your average Indian, African, or Chinese driver would make of that?
