Rising gas prices and doubts over the future availability of oil have spurred the resurgence of inexpensive subcompact cars in North America. The Toyota Yaris, Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio and Chevy's Daewoo-built Aveo led the way and on April 20 we'll have the Honda Fit (or "Jazz" as it is known elsewhere). The Fit spiritually replaces the Civic which has grown in size and price since its earlier affordable days, and will start at $13,850. A 1.5 liter four produces 109 hp and comes with a 5-speed manual or automatic, while a long list of standard safety equipment includes dual side and curtain airbags and anti-lock brakes. A sporty version with cruise, spoilers and a 160-watt sound system starts at $15,970, although as Autoblog comments, "we're not sure which of those components actually contributes to sportiness."
