Will the Red Baron Fly Again?
The story goes that the Red Baron failed his flight test three times before he was given the right to become a fighter pilot. There is no such thing as a "natural" pilot so the legend may well be true. If so, world motorcycle champion Valentino Rossi can take solace.
During his test for Ferrari's F1 auto race team, Rossi spun on his out-lap on a rainy track, then repeated the embarrassing moment twice the next day. On the same corner. Valentino… meet the Red Baron! But like the German fighter ace, Rossi didn't give up. He set the 10th fastest time of the day and although lapping a second behind Michael Schumaker, Rossi accomplished it in last year's car with a de-tuned V-10 engine. Michael was driving the new V-8-powered Ferrari 248. Neither came close to world driving champion Fernando Alonso, who set the fastest time of the day in his new Renault.
Only one former motorcycle champion, John Surtees, moved to Grand Prix auto racing and successfully wore the F1 crown. Rossi seems to have the right stuff and although he's not likely to switch to four wheels this year, watch out when the 2007 season arrives.
