Why Is Everything Getting Bigger?

Picture of 2006 Toyota RAV4

Why are foreign car makers now making everything bigger? OK, I'm mainly talking about what used to be small SUVs: Toyota's RAV4 (pictured) and Hyundai's Santa Fe. We'll almost give Hyundai a pass with the santa Fe because it does make the Tucson (a smaller SUV), but, in the case of the RAV4, it's almost as big as the Toyota Highlander so we're not sure we understand the distinction. Does anyone even remember the two-door RAV4 when it came out some years ago? I saw one recently and it was nearly unrecognizable to the RAV of today. Is bigger really better?
