Watch Out China, India's on the Move

India Chev Optra

So much of the talk in the auto industry these days is about China that another equally large market is often overlooked. India, which has the added benefit of a democratic system, also has a vast population eager to buy into 4-wheeled transportation and, in fact, is ahead of China in many aspects of sales and manufacturing.

For example, General Motors has announced the start of the "Chevrolet Indian Revolution" and unveiled three new Chevrolet passenger cars in the country: the Chevrolet Aveo U-VA, Chevrolet Aveo and Chevrolet Optra SRV (shown here). The Aveo is similar to the car of the same name sold in North America and in fact the model unveiled in India will soon arrive here. It will feature a modern powertrain with Variable Geometry Intake System technology, probably of 1.5 or 1.6 liters capacity, and will come in two body styles, a 4-door Aveo sedan and the U-VA, a five-door premium hatchback styled in Italy by Italdesign.

India also manufactures some interesting cars of its own and can even boast of an F1 racer, Narain Karthikeyan, which is a claim China can't yet make, although China does have a brand new world-class Formula 1 track. The India Times has the complete story plus photos of GM's new offerings.
