GX3

The first of the two big American auto shows has just opened its doors to the media and already Volkswagen is a sure bet for concept car of the year. The sensational GX3 rolled onto the VW stand (literally through the crowds) in Los Angeles to huge cheers from the assembled journalists. At least that's what our friends at Autoblog.com reported in their article about this extrordinary sports vehicle and I have no reason to doubt them after seeing the photos.

Volkswagen's GX3 is a 3-wheeler, the "X" standing for "crossover-motorcycle-car." It is powered by a 1.6 liter engine mounted transversely in the rear, which can propel the GX3 to 60 in 5.7 seconds as well as return 46 mpg. Though, as Autoblog amusingly suggested, "probably not at the same time." VW claims it could go into production as early as 2007 and sell for a mere $17,000. It all depends on consumer reaction, folks, so cast your vote "yes!"

3-wheeled sports cars are not new. morgan was making them as far back as 1909 and in the 1970's a cute, fast, and economical 3-wheeler, the Bond Bug, was produced in the UK. Contrary to what you may think, they're quite stable and capable of being driven around curves quickly without fear of rolling over. Designed in VW's new California studio, the GX3 is the answer for all us folks who admire motorcycles but prefer the safety of four wheels. Uh, make that three.
