Volvo is not what you would typically consider to be a performance marquee. However, there's an S80 slated to hit US dealers in February as a 2007 model that will have an available eight cylinder engine and all-wheel-drive. The base power plant for the new Volvo will be an in-line six displacing 3.2 liters instead of the 2.9 L power plant that's standard in the current car.
The Volvo V-8 is built by Yamaha with a 60° balanced camshaft and is the same engine found XC90 SUV. The power rating for the V-8 is 311 bhp at 5950 RPMs with 325 pound feet of torque. All that power is transmitted to the wheels via a six speed automatic transmission that can be manually shifted via the gear lever. The images of the interior look pretty cool if a little bit boring, though the color choices are cool. All this Volvo performance doesn't come cheap, you will pay around $40,000 for the standard in-line six, and the V-8 powered cars will run in the $50,000 range. Get more details at Road and Track.
