Volvo Makes Mellow Tones With New Inline Six

You'll never get me to endorse sport-utes (exception: when purchased for serious offroading) but on the other hand I'll never cease being an enthusiastic supporter of inline six-cylinder engines, which is why I'm putting in a good word for Volvo's 2007 CX90. It will be available, starting this summer, with an all-new 3.2 liter straight-six developing 235-horsepower and 236 lb.-ft. of torque. So why do I prefer the inline layout over a more compact V-6? Partly nostalgia, partly aural aesthetics. (Aural aesthetics? Remember… you saw it here first!) Whereas a V-6 sounds like an operatic tenor gargling to clear his throat before a concert, an inline-six has the mellow tones of a tenor saxophone in a cool jazz band. So good for you, Volvo, and if you ever need moral support, just call your pals at BMW.
