Here, at last, is the new S60 Volvo's been teasing us with for several months. It continues Volvo's efforts to rid itself of the boxy, unexciting design label the company's been stuck with for the last forty years. Has it succeeded? Well certainly the new sedan looks contemporary and aerodynamic; anything but dull. And yet the S60 is trendy rather than trend-setting, with its coupe-like roofline, wedge shape, and shallow rear windows. I'm wondering just how difficult it is to climb into the back seat if you're less than nimble. Last month I rode in a Mercedes C-Class taxi in Germany, which has a similar profile, and for a few seconds wondered if I was ever going to get my 6-foot frame through the opening. Volvo has not given up promoting safety, though, for the new S60 features a Pedestrian Detection system that detects pedestrians and brakes the car to a full stop from up to 30 mph if the driver fails to react. Info on the engine, transmission and suspension will have to await its unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show next March but in the meantime 'tis best to remember that the beauty is often in the details.
