When the price of gasoline again rises to $3.00-$4.00 per gallon, and believe me it will, the American public will turn to small cars at a rate that no one dared predict. GM (the "new" GM) wants to be ready for this revolution. It has two contenders waiting in the wings. The 2011 Chevy Cruze will replace the Cobalt, using GM's updated Delta 2 platform, due to be used on all GM small cars around the globe. Designed prior to the recession the Cruze is pleasant enough, however the styling is mainstream and the use of a torsion beam rear suspension instead of an independent system places too much emphasis on cost considerations. An even smaller car, one of equal importance to the company, is the Chevy Spark, due here in 2011. The Spark at least shows the spark of innovation but it's downright ugly. Fritz Henderson, General Motors President and CEO said "we believe this car will be a winner with our current and future customers in the U.S." If you really believe that, Mr. Henderson, then I'll bet you just loved the Aztec. Stop while there's still time and bring us a small car that's so cute we'll all want to hug it. Like the Fiat 500, for example.
