Stinking Badges
"Badges, we don't need no stinking badges."Out at the Pomona Swapmeet this past weekend, I solved a mystery, greater than the mystery of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (that's where the "stinking badges" quote originated). What happens to those badges that get knocked off or stolen off of your car?
They end up on a big tarp at the Swapmeet, for sale at $10 to $20 each. A quick glance over the tarp was like a virtual tour through the past century of automotive history. Just seeing some of the great old logos and designs brought back such a flood of memories that I was tempted to empty my pockets and pick up a bunch of badges to display in my home. I resisted — realizing how "Applebee's" that would feel in my house — but I still spent a good 20-30 minutes poring over the collection.
