Spy shooters have snapped volkswagen's lightly disguised, sixth generation Golf hatchback in the middle of a bout of weekend testing in the Californian desert.
What's remarkable about this latest Golf is just how unremarkable it is - styling has evolved rather than revolved from the current fifth generation. The car shares the current Golf's roof and much of the same window structure.
Volkswagen's corporate board anticipates that the next Golf will be cheaper to build because it will carry over many of the technical features from the current generation and scale down the number of engine and trim options to streamline production.
According to writers at CAR, the current Golf takes twice as long to build (37 hours) than its competition the Ford Focus.
