Who knew that so much industry news would center around healthcare? Alas, that's the current state of affairs where it pertains to the U.S. auto industry.
According to the Detroit News, GM's healthcare costs are projected to have grown by 14.7% between 2005 to 2008. Ford? An overall rise of 9.1% in the same time frame.
In dollars and cents terms, the current healthcare costs that are factored into each GM and Ford automobile now stands @ $1,783 and $1,064 per unit, respectively.
And while the United Auto Workers Union (UAW) has made some concessions with FoMoCo's top brass to ease the medical expense burden, Ford's liability is still likely to rise with GM's in the long term.
