Quick Drive in a Porsche Cayman
You wouldn't exactly call it a test drive but last week I was able to take the wheel of a Porsche Cayman S for an hour, thanks to About.com tester Colin Hefferon. Colin had the Cayman for a week whereas I'd turned down the opportunity to bring one home; driving a hot car in this retirement community is like running naked through a lawn bowling tournament. However, we were in downtown Vancouver and the ride back to the BC Ferry dock included city traffic, a crowded expressway, a few interesting curves, and a long, straight causeway where police cruisers never tread and where, if you're lucky, you can get a brief blast with no one to impede your progress. We reached 180 kph just as the 60 kph warning sign flashed by and heavy braking was required. What impressed me most was that I was able to get in and drive away as if the Cayman and I were old friends. It's not only quick, it's comfortable, easy to live with, and actually looks better than its Boxster cousin. Nice.
