Jason Fogelson recently tested a Pontiac G6 GTP Coupe for About Cars. His review caught my eye because I currently have a near-identical car in my garage and will also be reviewing it for the busy About.com site. My week with the G6 isn't over and I have more driving to do before reaching any firm conclusions but I was able to gain a few impressions during the trip from the city of Vancouver, where I picked it up, to my home on Vancouver Island.

Basically I agree with much of what Jason said, the one exception being his positive remarks regarding the car's styling. It just so happened that prior to driving the G6 I noted a Toyota Celica coupe and from a rear 3/4 view briefly mistook it for the new Pontiac. Since I had attended the press launch of the Celica several years ago it struck me at that moment just how outdated the G6 already is. (Toyota is phasing out the Celica.) Actually, I think the entire wedge-shape design concept, aerodynamic or not, is outdated. Move on, fellows, it's time for something new.

My G6 Coupe features a 6-speed manual. With the 240 hp V-6 the car is fast but it's work to drive. The manual box is anything but slick, the pedal placement makes it impossible to heel-and-toe, thus eliminating half the fun of a manual transmission. Vision to the rear is miserable and I'm dreading the moment when I have to crawl into the back seat to take photographs. Still, I have four more days in which to experience this Pontiac so perhaps I'll learn to love it. Maybe.
