Next BMW 5-Series To Share Platform With SUV

December 29, 2006 · Posted in Uncategorized

We cannot only admonish American car manufacturers for platform sharing. Other companies manage to have their models share platforms as well (albeit with more success, typically).

An example of this will be, according the UK automotive monthly AutoCar (p.20 of December's print issue), the next BMW 5-Series. The next generation of BMW's vaunted mid-size performance saloons will share both the wider platform and double wishbone suspension of the X5 SUV (SAV in Bavarian speak).

It's doubtful that Bimmer fans should find cause to worry as history has shown that each successive generation of 5-Series sedans has performed better than the previous generation.

The 5 Series began the BMW tradition of being named with a three-digit number. The first digit (5 in this case) represents the model, and the following two digits (usually) represent the size of the engine in decilitres, which is the main distinguishing difference. Additional letters or words may be added to the end of the three-digit number to define the fuel type (petrol or diesel), engine or transmission details, and the body style. The ‘i’ originally stood for (fuel) ‘injection’.
