New Rules Force Clean Diesels Off the Road
Filed in archive on May 29, 2006
Man, oh, man! I have to say that the good old USA's politicos certainly screw up chances of encouraging people to drive cars with fuel-saving engines. According to an article in the "Detroit Free Press", upcoming changes in diesel emissions standards will force Volkwagen to suspend sales of several diesel models for 2007... the only affordable diesel passenger cars currently available in the US. Gone for 2007 will be the Golf, Jetta, and Beetle TDI models although extra supplies of the 2006 Passat diesel will be shipped to the US in coming months. A Touareg diesel is on its way for the second time. The article continues with "a new emissions-compliant TDI Jetta will return to the market for 2008, but the fate of the other models isn't currently clear." Not sure how this affects Canadian buyers, who already benefit from low-sulphur diesel fuel at the pumps. Image: "Autoblog".

VW (and the Free Press article) neglected to mention that fact.
