Munro Indian at GNRS
More on the Grand National Roadster Show:
I met Tom Hensley, whose late brother Dean Hensley was the owner of the chassis and body of the bike that Burt Munro rode at Bonneville. There's a new film, The World's Fastest Indian, based on Munro's efforts — Phil blogged about it here a few weeks ago. Apparently, the chassis and body that you can see in the film is not the actual Munro bike — the Hensley family owns it, and drags it out to events to show off. Tom's brother Dean got the streamliner a few hands down from Munro and restored it beautifully — it's a gorgeous piece of machinery. Tom claims that the engine currently mounted in the chassis was Munro's final one, and that it is the engine/chassis combination that performed at Bonneville back in 1967. It has Porsche cylinders on an Indian Scout bottom end — a very interesting modification.
Hensley is preserving the bike as his brother's legacy. Dean was an artist and bike restorer, and is responsible for the beautiful painting on the side of the streamliner. Hensley has reproduced some of his brother's artwork for t-shirts and hats (I bought a hat). You can reach him at tmhensley@charter.net if you'd like one of these unique collectables.
