GM's "Car Czar" Bob Lutz is at it again - stirring the blogosphere into a frothing frenzy over a mere quip or two in his own FastLane Blog this Friday last. From Jalopnik to The Truth About Cars, the reactions (and condemnations) were swift.
The principal ruckus revolves around Mr. Lutz's rejection of the U.S. federal government's plans to raise the Corporate Average fuel economy (CAFE) standards to spur automakers into producing more fuel efficient vehicles.
His and GM's defense, Mr. Lutz states, is in the extensive alternative fuel research the company is currently undertaking and the E85 compatibility of many GM models. Add to that what he sees as the probable "electrification" of the car industry thanks to hybrids from Japanese automakers and Mr. Lutz in a not so subtle way drives home the point that government is behind industry.
Let the market decide, not government says "Maximum Bob". Let the debate continue say we.
