Miata Goes the Distance

Mazda Miata

Ever since the MX-5 Miata first appeared I've wanted one. A natural reaction for a long-time fan of small, affordable British sports cars, I suppose. Eventually I'll get my Miata but in the meantime I enjoy them vicariously, reading other journalist's test reviews. I've yet to try the third edition but the folks at Edmunds (where they obviously enjoy a handsome budget) have just purchased a 2006 Miata for a long-term test. Early indications are that the staff is having fun with it, just as they did in a Solstice/Miata comparison test in which the Solstice was soundly trounced. The commentator gleefully boasts about it suiting her Southern California lifestyle. How about my Pacific Northwest lifestyle? Yeah… you bet. Perfect.

Phil, I’ve driven the new MX5 and it’s a great evolution of the original, sure it’s grown a little, but so has the power. If you don’t get an opportunity professionally to drive one, look online for Mazda Rev It Up, it’s an event for the public where you have an oportunity to drive different Mazda products including MX5 and RX8 around some short courses at lower speeds, but it’s fun and free. And they have a decent free lunch of burgers and hot dogs. It travels around the country. I’ve gone for the last few years. It’s not as big as GM’s Auto Show In Motion, which they are suspending, but it’s a great way to see the entire Mazda line up. We make a day of it.
