Mercedes-Benz has announced the premiere of the McLaren SLR Roadster. It's the droptop version of the $450,000 hawknosed SLR supercar that has been on offer since 2004. And to match the car's blistering acceleration, the company has provided it with an electric top that's set to trounce the folding times of most other convertibles on the road.

"The roof – made from what Merc cryptically calls a 'newly developed material' – will be available in three colours, and is semi-automatic. It requires the user to unlatch it, after which it folds away electrically in under 10 seconds," said UK's AutoCar.

The magazine also reported that structural rigidity (required for traveling at speeds up to 206 mph) is not compromised thanks to the carbon fiber body work.

We'll have to wait and see for ourselves in the test drive.
