The world saw its first Mazda rotary engined car - the Mazda Cosmo Sport - in 1967. More than 40 years have passed and the world has since seen an additional two million Mazdas powered by Wankel's legendary, if quirky powerplant.
Mazda (and parent company Ford) are taking today as an opportunity to demonstrate how for over five decades Mazda has been able to successfully implement what some other automakers - notably Citroën, GM, and Rolls-Royce have attempted but could not (or chose not to) achieve.
FoMoCo's Japanese subsidiary claims that their current rotary engine is better equipped than standard engines to handle Hydrogen fuel and that there are hydrogen fuel-cell RX8s are already on the road in Japan. Mazda says that it is in the process of researching hydrogen-rotary-hybrid-electric technology to add to the green mix of alternative rotary powered choices.
