Maybach in LA
More from the LA Auto Show:
Maybach, the ultra-luxury division of DaimlerChrysler, brought out the 2006 57 S for its North American debut. It's got some great features — an AMG-sourced 604 hp/738 lb ft 6.0 liter twin-turbo V12 under the hood; new grill and front fascia; new rear design with dual rectangular stainless steel exhaust tips; 20 inch Alloy Wheels; sport suspension with ABS and traction control; parking assist with a rear view camera; carbon fiber and piano lacquer interior trim and lots more. You can add a business package ($9,900) that includes a dual-port router, Bluetooth color printer, PCMIA cards for your laptops without Bluetooth and seat back storage compartments (add another $2900 per seat). MSRP for the 57 S is — take a deep breath — $369,750. That's a $34,500 premium over the "standard" 57.
Gotta say — I don't get it. I just don't get it. Is there really anybody on the whole planet who needs this car? If you are rich enough, why would you spend your money this way? And the upcharges for accessories just kill me — $9,900 for a router, a printer and some PC cards? Do the rich not have access to OfficeMax?
Okay, the 57 S is absolutely gorgeous in a handbuilt-by-master-craftsmen kind of way. And I'm sure it drives like a dream — not that I would ever want to take the wheel of a car that costs more than most houses I've lived in.
I really don't get it.
