Lots Of Shows

There's a car show and an electronics show this week. Man, it's show business. Har! Jason's been covering the car stuff pretty well, but I did run across some neat car-seat gadget from the electronics show. The idea behind this gadget is to let you know if the car seat is installed correctly. While I really don't think it's that hard to install a car seat, I was glad to see someone trying to do something about it.
What I would really like to see made is a car alarm that goes off if a child is left in the car seat inside the car. "What?" you say, "Who does that?" Sadly, it happens dozens of times each year in the U.S. alone. And while it's winter now, it won't be long before children start dying from heat exposure because a forget person leaves them in the car. I can't imagine a system like this is hard to build since there's sensors in cars that check all sorts of things: oil pressure, tire pressure, the weight of a person in the front seat… heck, sensors for everything. This piece: Are Safety Experts Killing Our Kids? is right on the money.
No driver should be able to exit a car with a child in a car seat without being reminded the child is in the car. … If you, as an engineer, cannot figure out a way to tell that a metal buckle has been snapped into a metal fitting, you need to go back to school.
Would you pay a little more for cars knowing they had this kind of safety device in it? Keep in mind lots of people pay a little more for 450-watt stereos with 16 speakers and 20" wheels.

That car alarm whenever a child is left in the car is very beneficial. I have known a person who felt very guilty leaving his 6 mos baby inside. The baby died after being inside the car for almost 5 hours. I guess, finding a solution for this one really helps avoid this kind of case to happen again.
