Just in Time for the Recession: The $2000 Car

All those who thought the Nano would be a "no no" had better say "yes yes." India's Tata Motors has finally launched what the manufacturer calls "the world's cheapest car." It sells for Rs. 1 lakh (about $2,000 U.S.) plus shipping, taxes, and registration for the no frills version in a color choice of red, yellow or white without a radio or air conditioning. Those who want a little "luxury" in their Nano can move up to one of two fancier versions and get more color choices plus power door locks, power windows, fog lamps and a cupholder. The little car meets all safety and emissions rules, including rollover and offset impact, and comes with an 18-month/24,000 kilometer warranty.
In a country where families are accustomed to riding on two-wheelers, the Nano represents comfort, convenience and fuel economy. With a 33-horsepower, 623 cc two-cylinder engine and four-speed gearbox it's no supercar but has enough acceleration and speed for Indian highway use. The car is expected to be so popular in its home country that reservations are being taken, with the first 100,000 randomly selected by computer. According to the official press release a Nano phone, watch, t-shirt and other accessories will be available when the first deliveries begin in July. Of course, a car like the Nano would never sell in America… but isn't that what they said about the Beetle many years ago?
