When Chrysler announced it's co-op arrangement with Fiat, small car enthusiasts from coasts-to-borders in the US and Canada rejoiced. Finally, they'd get access to the Fiat 500, grandchild of those delightful small Fiats of the 60s and 70s. Few of the originals found their way into North America but we travelers rented them in Europe (along with identical Spanish-built Seats) and were well aware of the wicked Abarth modified versions. The new 500, though retro-inspired, is thoroughly modern and a worthy competitor for the MINI and New Beetle. It appears that our dreams of owning one are soon to be realized, although Chrysler is again hinting of amalgamation with General Motors, which would put paid to the Fiat deal if it happened. (Fortunately GM has no interest in such a disastrous marriage.)
Now comes more news to feed our growing desires. Fiat has just announced a C500 Cabriolet version featuring an electrically-operated fabric roof that folds back along siderails similar to the original 60s car. This is not a convertible in the true sense of the word but on the other hand it's a lot more than just a sunroof and has the advantage that it can be opened a little or a lot. Power choices in Europe include a 1.2-liter 69hp engine, a 1.4-litre 100hp engine, and a 1.3-liter 75hp Multijet Turbodiesel. The 5-speed manual gearbox features Fiat's latest "Start&Stop" system, automatically turning off the engine when parked in neutral. A Dualogic automatic transmission is an option. Power choices could be different when the 500 finally arrives here, with the 100hp four a logical choice, though the diesel would be a treat. I can hardly wait.
