Chalk this one up to the obsessive compulsive pursuit of finite detail.
Last summer, someone @ "American Honda Motor Co., Inc." (otherwise known simply as "Honda") sounded the alarm that a total of 1,108,000 2006 Honda and Acura owner's manuals and 18,000 2007 H. & A. manuals did not contain the correct toll-free number for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) "Vehicle Safety Hotline".
Stop the presses! And they did.
In a letter to the NHTSA dated July 25th, Honda's managing council acknowledged that the automaker had thus far failed to voluntarily comply during the voluntary compliance period (6/05 to 9/06) by not printing the agency's updated contact info.
The program for remedying this most heinous act of corporate non-compliance during the government recommended voluntary compliance period was to comply, in full, with the terms set forth by the NHTSA that were in effect for the duration of said voluntary compliance period.
In short, Honda mailed postcards to dealerships and owners with the right phone number.
Phew, crisis averted!
