Hybrids a Building Block, Not a Solution

No sooner than the first Prius was on North American roads than my old racing pal Phil Bailey was doing a slash-and-burn. Phil owns a serious independent garage in Montreal and has his own Web site wherein he rips everything in the auto world he doesn't approve of, which is a lot. But quite a few years have passed since then and the hybrid, while not exactly mainstream, is here to stay. I like it. I'm currently testing a Civic Hybrid and to suggest I'm impressed is no exaggeration. We're not there yet on electric cars (a hybrid is 1/2 an electric) and fuel cell technology is delayed until the oil companies consent to take a few risks with their billion bucks of profits, so the hybrid is an acceptable building block. Bradley Berman, editor of hybridcars.com, offers an interesting commentary in Business Week, though I'm not quite sure which side he's on.
