How VW Rose From the Ashes, Literally

New Beetle Convertible
At one time most North American car buyers were at least partially aware of Volkswagen's history, in particular the car that started it all, the Beetle. But I suspect few of today's generations have any knowledge of the company's past. Marty Bernstein's VW Story in Business Week reduces 70 years to a few paragraphs yet manages to hit all the high spots, including the legendary ad campaign that put VW on the American map. It's especially timely as the company struggles back from a difficult period (not for the first time) and is currently running a campaign that some regard as trend-setting but I (and others like me) think is insulting, stupid, and downright risky for the survival of the brand in the US. That aside, I can certainly recommend the few minutes required to read Bernstein's condensed history.
