Hippie Camper Van Dreams

Do you every feel like you want to get away from it all?

My girlfriend and I have this fantasy that someday we're going to buy a VW Eurovan Westfalia poptop camper van and travel the country. Neither of us is really a camper, and we're not really R.V. people either. We figured we wouldn't mind roughing it in the Westfalia for a few nights here and there, and stopping at a hotel for showers and such when necessary. We could visit our friends, and sleep in our van in their driveways.

There's a very active community of Westfalia owners out there, and they're very active on the web. The serious ones have the old aircooled VW Microbus Westfalia, but I can't see driving around with 45 horsepower at my Beck and call. The Eurovan version is a little more powerful, sporting a 140 hp 2.8 liter V6 up front driving the front wheels.

Jalopnik reported on a new Westfalia concept car that was entered in the 2005 Michelin Design Challenge -- I hope that they decide to build that one soon.
