I've just become aware that John Lennon's psychedelic Rolls-Royce is kept and maintained at an automotive restoration shop in Victoria, BC, less than 20 miles from my home. I learned this while surfing the Web for background information on an article I was composing for the About Classic Cars site. The story reveals that the Beatles were car guys; especially Paul McCartney, who drove an exquisite Aston Martin DB6 for many years. Lennon, aside from his outrageous-looking Roller, also owned an Alfa Romeo Sprint 2600.
All four Beatles drove Minis when they were in London. If that sounds odd, consider that Minis were considered trendy in the 60's and early 70's and were owned by everyone from pop stars to royalty. Several coachbuilders specialised in customising Minis to make them luxurious and more attractive and, of course, they could be modified to go very, very fast. Ringo's Mini was changed to a hatchback so his drums would fit. Next time I motor down to Victoria I will definitely drop in at Bristol Motors to have a peek at the world's most famous Rolls-Royce.
