Great Drives in Tunisia. Yes, Tunisia

An incurable romanticist, I'm easily swayed by "great drives" articles. If the location is halfway across the planet we nevertheless dream and sometimes get lucky. So it was for Farhad Heydari, a German-based journalist who was privileged to try exotic driving roads in Tunisia while visiting ancient underground living sites dating back to Roman times. "Driving in Tunisia demands one's complete faculties. That's because road conditions vary from immaculate to absolutely appalling to nonexistent within the span of a mile and depending on the weather. Then there are the slow-moving obstacles: mule-powered lorries, mopeds loaded down with families and 1960s-era Peugeot 404 pickups." Heydari says that "rows of squat century-old olive trees, fine sugar-cane beaches, and the still vastness of the Sahara stuck out in my mind." Add the delights of North Africa's most Europeanized capital plus a Renault Mégane Sport, and this must surely be a great drive.
