Goodbye, Sport Compact

Another fad hits the dust. The Sport Compact scene, according to this Autoweek article, is fading into the sunset. Some called it the 21st Century version of early hotrodding, others felt it represented the creativity of today's youth market, while the pessimists blamed it for the rash of dreadful street racing accidents. I'm not taking sides because if I were young today, I'd likely be modifying a Honda Civic for legitimate racing on proper road racing tracks, just as I did, decades ago, with my modified, class-winning VW Beetle. But you can blame the automakers and after-market manufacturers for the Sport Compact's demise. Commerce sometimes kills. Photo from urbanracer.com
