GM Drops Suzuki but No Regrets in Japan

Geo Tracker

It's been a few years since I spent a day driving a Geo Tracker up, down and around a closed road for the benefit of TV advertising cameras. But I recall the occasion for two reasons. First, I was surprised by how well the little SUV handled and second, I was paid a lot of money for my efforts. Went out and bought an expensive leather coat that was later stolen from an airplane while I tried to assist a japanese passenger who could speak no English. (Must be a moral there somewhere.) What brought this to mind was learning in the Detroit Free Press that GM has reduced its stake in Suzuki Motor Corporation from 20.4-percent to just 3.0-percent, all but severing 25-year-old ties with the Japanese automaker. The Tracker was a Suzuki Sidekick with a Chevrolet/Geo nameplate made in Ontario's jointly-owned CAMI plant. Will Suzuki miss GM's badge engineering? Somehow I doubt it.
