Give Seniors a Break

Filed in archive on February 17, 2006

2007 Avalon

When I first qualified as a "senior" I hated the word. It was demeaning, suggestive of an old geezer whose bones were falling apart. Hardly descriptive of a guy who speed-walked every day and still flew light aircraft. Then I discovered the many price discounts available and humbly requested a "senior discount, please!"

I'm still test-driving new cars and must admit that such conveniences as ease-of-entry/exit are important, as well as good sightlines and simple controls. And yes, much as I believe in backing into parking spaces, my old neck is reluctant to co-operate. Video reversal is a blessing.

So Edmunds.com creates a "10 Best Cars For Seniors"list and, with a couple of exceptions such as the Toyota avalon and Honda Civic, I'm not impressed. Too many recommended cars are expensive, ignoring the fact that many of us in the Geezer Class must be cautious with up-front prices and ongoing fuel costs. Ask me and I'll give you a "10 Best List" that makes sense.
