Geneva Loses Its Magic
The Geneva Auto Show was always the one to watch for dramatic new designs. At the time of my first visit in the late 1960's most of the concepts came from Italian design studios, for that was an era when Italy led the world in automobile styling. It was exciting just to be there.
This year I'll happily give it a pass. After looking over theCarConnection's Geneva Preview, I'm shocked at how uninspired and even downright ugly some of the cars appear, as manufacturers struggle to define themselves and their brands in an ever-more segmented market.
But there's one vehicle that grabbed my attention: the Mitsubishi Concept-EZ MIEV. I think the Concept-EZ is brilliant as it demonstrates how car designers can master the conflicting needs of consumers and the environment.
Power is delivered by electric motors built into the wheel hubs, so that each wheel can be driven or braked separately; no heavy transmission, no drive shafts, no differential. Energy comes from a 110 hp lithium-ion battery package beneath the floor. The layout provides a flexible interior; because the steering wheel is retractable and all seats are foldable, the car can be adapted for "recreational" uses. No wisecracks, please.
