From SportsCenter to Playstation 2 Games, Racing is America’s New Pastime

While many of the major sports have seen their popularity wane–whether from strikes or cheating players, one sport has seen a big surge in interest. That sport is racing. It's become a staple of sports media and Playstation 2 games. Millions of fans flock to tracks all over America to see the fastest sport on the planet. And it's not only for the race, it is also for the festivities before and after. The excitement of the race and the surroundings make it America's new favorite pastime.
Face it, people like things that are simple; usually simple is better. A lot of potential sport fans are turned off by the intricate rules of other sports that take a while to understand. The sport of racing is as simple as it comes. Cars race around a track for a certain amount of laps and the first one over the finish line is the winner. People can be engaged at their very first race. And ,it isn't a boring sport. There are no down times or time outs that can cause someone to lose interest. Where else can you see sportsmen really defy death by reaching hundreds of miles per hour?
Sport's fans like to cheer for athletes that they can connect to. Not everyone drives a luxury car or wears diamond studded earrings like a lot of sports stars. Race car drivers in contrast have a normal demeanor, as most are known to stick to their roots. This builds a connection between star and fan, and creates a more loyal following as people can think of their favorite athlete being just like themselves.
And while the drivers present no pretension, neither does the atmosphere. Race tracks aren't topped by luxury suites like most arenas. There is no separation of high class in the front and low class in the stands. Everyone sits together, and enjoys motorsports together.
