From Britain, an American Cord Comes Home

37 Cord at Auction

Just off the main hall under the Barrett-Jackson Auction tent in Scottsdale is a second area where the "star cars" are displayed prior to sale. Although the cars are roped off and the lighting is dim, I was able to photograph a number of these beauties for your enjoyment. One I particularly admired was the legendary 1937 Cord. Designed by the equally-legendary Gordon Buehrig, it is among the top-ten best automobile designs of all time.

This Cord is currently owned by Michael Mills, a music composer and teacher who lives in London and feels compelled to sell because of a lack of parking space and concerns over driving it in crowded London traffic. The money the Cord earns in auction will help support Michael in his work and believe me, it should be worth a small fortune if the bidders are as keen as I anticipate.

Believe it or not, I had a chance to buy on of these in the 1940′s for $750.00. I had the money and thought it was the most beautiful car I had ever seen (it still ranks towards the top). My Dad wouldn’t let me because he had heard they had gearshift/transmission troubles.
I have never forgiven him even though I know he met well.
