First Versa Test, Clowns Need Not Apply

Nissan Versa

I knew there was something familiar about the Nissan Versa but I couldn't quite identify it. Now Edmunds, in a "first drive" road test, reveals the truth. The Versa is built on the Renault Megane platform and even has hints of Megane styling, especially around the C-pillar and hatch area. Which is no bad thing. However I do object to the editor's attempt at being clever by comparing the Versa to a "clown car," a category in which it also includes the Toyota Yaris, the Scion Xa, Kia Rio5, and the honda fit. The reference is to small cars where circus acts cram up to a dozen clowns inside. Yet there's nothing clownish about the Versa, for it not only has exemplary interior space but is attractive, economical, and fun to drive. Circus references aside, this Edmunds test is quite useful as both the 1.8 CVT-equipped and 1.8 6-speed manual are reviewed. I'm looking forward to testing one myself but hopefully it will be a CVT example as that's what most buyers will choose.
