Ferrari Barchetta

In his early years as a constructor Enzo ferrari had no interest in building street cars. He was dedicated to motor racing and preferred to devote his entire resources to the sport. But economics forced him to compromise, for which we can all be thankful.

Several of his magnificent machines are on sale at the RM Auctions event in Phoenix, however the one I like best is also the oldest, this 1952 Ferrari 212 "Touring" Barchetta. I admire its simplicity, its lightness, its purity of line. To me, it speaks of "sports car" in the truest sense and as Enzo was pleased to acknowledge, could also be driven in races. Including today's vintage events.

The car to be auctioned here began its life as a PF Inter coupe, then was rebodied as a Barchetta, using the original chassis and powertrain. Lacking any special provenence regarding previous owner or race heritage, it may sell for a not unreasonable price. As the song says, "If I Were a Rich Man… "
