For the life of me, I will never fully comprehend just why the last generation (850 based) Volvo C70 convertible was not a success. Sales of the Pininfarina designed drop-top stagnated throughout production. My best guess is that two factors hindered the model's rise.

The first factor was Volvo's safety image. At $40K, Volvo was pitching its lively C70 convertible against fiercely sexy topless competition from BMW's 3-Series, Saab's 9-3, and even Mercedes-Benz's CLK cabriolet. The Swede's rivals won the day from a marketing standpoint for their image was not strictly linked to soccer mom's driving in sturdy, box wagons.

The second factor was the <span class=fear factor. The tops on the earlier models failed and the C70's early start was hindered by these and other quality control issues straight out of the factory from Sweden.

But fear needn't play a part in this eBay bid. It's a 2003, "saphire black" on tan C70 convertible with 55K on the clock. The car is covered under Volvo's 100,000 mile extended warranty which is golden. So that means a fear free purchase of one svelte Swedish 2+2 convertible.

The "reserve" has yet to be met, but something tells me the seller's looking to sell around $17K.

Such a lovely car. And only 3 Days left.
