Driving with children

How do you prepare for a trip with children? Even if it is to the cornner store it could be a nightmare. Properly prepared, with kids in seats, and buckled in is just the start. When I had babys, and they were still being transported in carriers, I often feared not putting them in the car, possibly on the top of the car, and then driving off. I still have nightmares about that. So do you have a mental or physical list of do's and don'ts.
