Any automobile couinesseur who knows his history will tell you the Deusenberg was America's greatest car. Owned and driven by movie stars and wealthy buyers, it was super-car expensive and during its time, very fast. With 320 hp from a supercharged straight-eight SJ it's still fast.
Deusenbergs normally featured custom bodies and that plus its exclusivity makes any "Deusie" a costly and desireable classic. So what if the Deusenberg were to rise again, created by a famous designer and featuring modern mechanicals... would it be worthy of the name or is this too much of an icon to ever be replicated? It's been tried before, without success. But now designer Walter Teague thinks he can make it work and judging by the early sketches, he may pull off the near-impossible.
Teague discusses the original Deusenbergs and offers a look at what he has in mind, during a slide show in Business Week online. Believe me, you'll enjoy seeing these magnificent cars so do take a look. And tell us if you think Walter Teague's approach, as seen in this drawing from Teague Design International Inc., is the right one.
