Coming… a New Car for Just $7500

There will always be a place for simple, bare-bones, inexpensive transportation. First-time buyers, students, and even middle-class folk who believe basic is all anyone really needs; these make up the bulk of the potential market. So I wasn't scoffing when I read Autoweek's story in which Geely USA Inc. COO John Harmer said Chinese automaker Geely wants to start selling cars in the United States by fall 2008. Harmer says his goal is for the car to have a sticker price of $7500, equipped with power windows, air conditioning and a single-disc CD player. The vehicles will meet U.S. safety and emissions standards. That sticker may creep closer to the $10,000 mark by then but if the Geely is reliable and offers sufficient performance it will not only succeed but mark the start of a new tidal wave of imports.
