Classic Redux ~ Mercedes-Benz 300SD

Few postmodern automobiles have aged as gracefully as the iconic W126 generation S-Class built by Mercedes-Benz from 1979-1991 (and as late as 1994 in a special assembly in South Africa). These graceful Teutonic juggernauts defined that most-used of descriptive expressions for Benzes of the day; "like a bank-vault."

There is one particular model of the vintage that was particularly noteworthy. The "series-1" 300SD that was built up until 1985 has grown into the world's greatest large-sedan workhorse. Many have more than 300,000 miles on the odometer.

This grand saloon has become something of a cult car. At over 200 inches long and weighing in at roughly 4,000 lbs, this big Benz cosseted drivers and passengers alike - one would expect - but with 600 miles as the typical range it was the greatest combination of luxury and economy in its day.

Sadly, many of these cars were purchased with unfortunate 80s colors - yellowing camel, make-that-heavy-starch banker's grey, and for-purple-hairs-only powder blue. The lucky few can enjoy this stately car's form best in raven black, royal Bordeaux, navy blue, and, extremely rare, Glacier white.

But whatever the color, a well maintained 300SD remains one of the safest, best engineered, and luxurious conveyances on the road today.
