Chrysler's Not-So-Secret Comeback

Chrysler, the .5 in Detroit's "Big 2.5" is not fairing as well as one might hope. Outshone by star stablemate Mercedes-Benz and undercut by the clever, homegrown competition from Japanese rivals Honda and Toyota, Chrysler's falling 2006 sales demonstrate the need for a turn-around plan – ASAP.

' Auto Insider claims to have the skinny on just what such a 180 degree maneuver would look like in practice. The it's so secret it's appeared in print "Project X" (sounds like another "Bold Move" to me) entails U.S. plant closures, manufacture outsourcing to Mexico, and closer production ties to Mercedes-Benz. While the last aspect is more hopeful than the rumors that the two were being separated, some might fear that it may make the Chrysler brand as pointless as Ford's Mercury.
