Chrysler Imperial

Thanks to AutoWeek, I see Chrysler's Imperial concept is being shown around. It makes me think of a lot of things:

What's up with the enormous wheels?

They need to finish the grille.

Why aren't more doors made this way?

What happened to ultra-luxury?

First, those wheels are just silly-big. I can totally see the fun in bigger wheels but 22"? Why not 24" then? Heck, make 'em 30" and call it a night. Is there no understatement in refined luxury any longer? Second, that grille has to go. I know it's supposed to look like a Rolls and it's sorta the same grille as the 300 has now… but it still looks unfinished to me (I know, it's still a concept). Next, the doors. Now that's classy. It's also a heck of a lot easier to get in and out of the backseat this way. And I don't want to hear nuthin' 'bout no suicide doors. Compared with today, you could say everything made back then was suicide-ish.

Finally, I wanted to touch on ultra-luxury. Where did it go? Now, I don't mean for you and me…. I mean for the refined class. Every car made today sure seems to be made for the driver first and the passengers second. I long for the day a car is made for Phil to chauffeur me around in and I go to my friend's country estate and we all get to order our servants around. What the? Ahem! Anyway, I'm betting Chrysler does make the Imperial, but it won't look quite like the concept. Here's to hoping the Imperial doesn't pull a Phaeton.
