Chinese Alfas & Fiats On The Way

By Gunnar Heinrich
Not since marco polo brought noodles back to Venice has Italy stood to benefit as greatly from the Chinese.
Fiat, SpA has announced that it will enter into a partnership with Chery Automobiles to jointly manufacture 175,000 Fiats and Alfa Romeos for the Chinese and other (likely developing) markets.
Chery will also supply the Italians with 100,000 1.6 and 1.8 liter engines per year for Fiats sold worldwide.
"The introduction of Alfa Romeo in China represents an historical step, launching one of the most attractive brands of the European car industry into the world's fastest-growing automotive market," Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne stated.
Fiat had originally attempted to broker a deal with Nanjing Auto, parent company of the reborn MG Rover label. Those talks failed after Nanjing neglected to pony up the requisite dough for its side of the deal.
Production for the Chinese Alfas and Fiats will commence in 2009.
